Late Shri Narayan Malhar Joshi, one of the pioneers in modern Indian social work, established The Social Service League in 1911. Following are the activities which were started under N.M. Joshi Era. In 1917, League established its first public library at Chinchpokli in Mumbai almost 103 years ago. League conducted relief work for poor and destitute and started night school at Parel in 1922 (First night school in India). League also focused on women empowerment and started its first Industrial School for Women (I.S.W.) at Parel in 1924. Three more I.S.W.s started at Vile Parle, Girgaon and Mazgaon in the year 1925, 1930 & 1965 accordingly. In 1924 first Textile Training Institute (T.T.I.) started at Parel, It has been closed since 2000 due to strikes by mill workers. Damodar Thackeray Mulji Hall was started as an entertainment center for the working class in the year 1922 by League. After shree N.M Joshi’s demise, League continue to conduct its activities. For the convenience of working women, League started its first Cradle in 1989 which was named after late Mathurabai Dhuru. The idea of Cradle is now being transformed into a Day Care Centre in the face of rapidly changing social conditions. Later on League started Day School in the year 1966, Junior College 1974, Pre-Primary School in 1975, Social Worker training named “DISHA” in 1988 and Generic Medicine Centre in the year 2017 under its umbrella. Special Mid Day Meal activity conducted for Pre-Primary students. SSL English School (CBSE) founded in the year 2010, is indeed a brainchild of the trust.
