Mr. Shiv Nadar is widely regarded as one of the pioneering forces behind India’s computing and IT revolution. As the visionary founder of HCL, he has led the organization for over 45 years, guiding it through successive waves of technological change since 1976. From its origins as a hardware company that built India’s first indigenous computers, HCL has evolved into a global software and services powerhouse—one of the few IT companies founded in the 1970s that continues to thrive. Mr. Nadar’s belief in research, innovation, and strategic partnerships helped shape HCL’s journey, including the establishment of one of the world’s largest IT engineering and R&D divisions. His career began in the prestigious DCM management trainee program, where he met the core team that would eventually launch HCL from a modest “barsati” in Delhi, driven by the belief that microprocessors would revolutionize the world. Deeply influenced by the scholarships and education he received, Mr. Nadar has always championed access to quality education as a powerful instrument of change. In 1994, he founded the Shiv Nadar Foundation, a philanthropic initiative inspired by his experience at HCL, aimed at creating transformational institutions across the educational spectrum. With over US$1.2 billion invested as of March 2022, the Foundation has directly impacted more than 39,000 students and alumni, nurturing young leaders from modest and remote backgrounds who are now pursuing their dreams in India and abroad.

As a Trustee of the Shiv Nadar Foundation, he plays a pivotal role in driving its mission of nation-building through transformational leadership. Shikhar is also the founding CEO of Shiv Nadar Schools (established in 2012), which have quickly emerged as some of the most sought-after institutions in the National Capital Region, consistently ranked among the top schools in India. Under his guidance, these schools are redefining education by imparting essential life skills and preparing students to navigate a complex global future. With a vision to expand this legacy, the Shiv Nadar School is now extending its footprint to Chennai, with a new campus in Adyar. In addition, Shikhar is the Chancellor of Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence (Shiv Nadar IoE), one of the youngest private universities to be recognized by the Government of India as an Institution of Eminence. In 2012, the Shiv Nadar Foundation made its foray into K12 urban private school education with a singular purpose – to breach and surpass the existing benchmarks in education, and bring the finest learning experiences to students.
Swimming against the tide of conventional rote/textbook practices, we began with a handful of students and teachers in two schools (Noida and Gurgaon), and a carefully designed intent to be a space where holistic development was the norm, where lifelong learning was the ultimate goal, and where, through progressive, personalized learning methods, the student was the centre of all endeavours.
Learning at our schools is never linear; instead, students are immersed in the multidimensional and the experiential. They play, they perform, they experiment, they interact. We integrate an experiential pedagogy and extensive use of technology into our educational practices. We place considerable curricular emphasis on sports and the arts. It was this emphasis on creativity, innovation, and holistic development, which resonated most with our parents. Today the Shiv Nadar School fraternity is a strong community of 5000+ students, 1000+ staff, and 10,000+ parents.
