History of the Bhaktavatsalam Educational Trust and Brindavan Schools
After India gained independence, quality educational institutions quickly emerged in urban areas, receiving significant patronage and growing rapidly. However, this development left rural children at a disadvantage compared to their urban counterparts.
To bridge this gap, the Bhaktavatsalam Educational Trust was established in 1958 by Mr. O. V. Alagesan, a freedom fighter and former Union Minister. The trust was named in honor of Mr. Bhaktavatsalam, a fellow freedom fighter, Gandhian, and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Both men were visionaries dedicated to nation-building and the promotion of equitable education.
In the same year, the trust launched its first rural initiative: Bhaktavatsalam Shashtiapdapoorthi High School in Athur, commemorating Bhaktavatsalam’s 60th birthday. Recognizing the growing demand for technical education in the region, the Bhaktavatsalam Polytechnic was also established in 1958 in Kanchipuram.
During a break from parliamentary service, Mr. Alagesan initiated another major educational effort by founding the first Brindavan School in Coonoor in 1969. This school was created to offer quality public school education beyond the elite, starting modestly with only 13 students. It soon earned a strong reputation for accessible and exemplary education.
Following its success, Brindavan Public School, Athur was founded in 1973 in the founder’s home district. Later, in 1983, another Brindavan school was established on the scenic banks of Kodaikanal Lake.
Today, the three Brindavan Schools—in Coonoor, Athur, and Kodaikanal—serve over 2,500 students and graduate more than 200 students annually.
