Sense of Identity in children

Children are not things to be moulded, but are people to be unfolded.

- Jess Lair

Identity, in general, is the process of knowing oneself and learning that we have an important place in the world around us. It might sound quite bizarre, but children do develop a sense of identity from a rather young age. The sense of identity starts developing from a young age and with the active participation of people that are constantly in touch with the children. They do think of answers regarding who they are and how the people around perceive them. They keep asking questions to find their answers. They are aware of being able to do something and hence, celebrate small achievements.

How do Children Develop Identity?

It all begins when children realize that we are all born as separate individuals. Once that sense of self gets developed, children realize that they too have a place in this world, even if they are different from others. We all different in our bodies, gender, size and skills and hence, they realize that we all have a place in this world.

But not all children might be adept at discovering their sense of identity. That’s where the parents and the school come in. Here is a list of measures that can help you to develop a sense of identity in your children.

  • Be there for the child- Pay close attention to your child. Answer their questions and help them to obtain a clearer vision of self. Help them to communicate when they seem to be stuck. Acknowledge their tiny achievements and let them know that they are loved.

  • Encourage your child- Encourage your child to make choices and decisions. Encourage them to solve problems and to keep going whenever things start getting tough. Let them try things that they look forward to. Help them in their quest of becoming independent. This will help to instil self-confidence in them.

  • Instil values in your child- Focus on important values like integrity, hard work, respect, compassion, morality and responsibility. Make them familiar with the importance of these values. Teach them to be kind and compassionate to elders and even to kids that are younger than them. There are kids education apps and games available online, you can always use them.

  • Introduce them to self-care and self-love- One of the most important traits in developing a sense of identity is being familiar with oneself and to value oneself. Remind them that they are beautiful and important in their way. Help them in highlighting their innate talents and nurturing them to success.
